A Potpourri of Floral Artisans!

Video: "Ringling in Bloom"
In 1927, Mable Ringling started The Sarasota Garden Club forever transforming the landscape, culture and lifestyle of the Gulf Coast. The organization gave rise to Sarasota's fascination with flora, contributing to growth in natural green space with blossoming blooms, beautification of its downtown shops and locals knowledge of horticulture -- the art or science of growing flowers and such in gardens or orchards.

Mable hosted the first Garden Club meeting at the Ca' d'Zan with 30 people attending in May 1927. Shortly thereafter 12 other "garden circles"  reportedly began to sprout up around the city and a number of shops on Main Street began using flowers to beautify their storefronts. Highly respected for her gardening prowess, Mable produced several crops of prize-winning flowers in the late 1920's from her famous Rose Gardens.

Passion for gardens and flowers continues to run deep in Sarasota more than 80 years later. Continuing Mable's legacy of seeding the populace of Southwest Florida with an appreciation of flowers, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is cultivating further interest in flora and floral arts on a scale never seen before with Ringling in Bloom, February 3-6 at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

Ringling in Bloom is a four-day showcase of flowers, fine art, fashion, food, music and dining. It appeals to a wide range of audiences, including gardening enthusiasts, foodies, music fans, fashionistas, and anyone fascinated with flowers.

·         Kicking off the inaugural Ringling in Bloom, February 3, more than 25 floral designers from garden clubs along Florida's Suncoast will reveal fresh floral arrangements inspired by art.  Inspired by the museum's signature paintings and decorative art from its permanent collection, these floral masterpieces will be unveiled during the Designer's Preview.

·         It also includes:

o   Demonstrations and workshops on creating beautiful bouquets by master floral designer René van Rems

o   The unveiling of Lilly Pulitzer's 2011 Spring Collection of fine art inspired silhouettes

o   a concert by Key Chorale Chorus
