The "Smart" Power Grid

Video: Save money by saving energy!

The United States power grid has become dangerously outdated over the past few decades.  In recent years, parts of the country have been hard hit by power shortages and blackouts, ultimately costing the American consumer billions of dollars annually.  New power lines and a more efficient system will be needed to bring the United States up-to-date.   As part of the recent economic stimulus package, the Obama administration has pledged $3.4 billion toward "smart grid" technology to stabilize the power grid in the event of a failure, better incorporate alternative energies, and vastly improve overall efficiency.

During the summer months, more fans are turning and more air conditioners are blowing to ensure that everyone stays cool.  But all of this energy use comes at a price. What can be done to ensure we move power to areas where and when they need it? How can the expansion of smart grid technology over the next decade help consumers better manage their energy consumption and save money?

Jeff Wills is currently Director of Solutions Strategy for the Building Technologies Division of Siemens Industry.  In this role, he is responsible for the product portfolio for the Siemens Building Automation business segment, and has over 20 years of experience in product marketing and technology development that hopes to better serve businesses and consumers.  Most recently, Jeff led a cross-functional technology and strategy team to investigate the impact and opportunity of the Smart Grid on buildings, and the key role of building technologies in helping prepare buildings for Smart Grid evolution and adoption.
