Build oyster domes for Tampa Bay!
Video: Give Them A Home!
Tampa Bay Watch staff and volunteers construct oyster domes onsite at the Marine Center (3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL) at regular intervals throughout the year. The dome-building process includes pouring marine-friendly concrete into fiberglass molds. The project runs from 9:00 am- approximately 12:00 pm on the dates below. Registration is required. Oyster domes are constructed onsite at the Tampa Bay Watch Marine Center at regular intervals throughout the year in preparation for placement in Tampa Bay, to minimize shoreline erosion and provide surface area for oysters to attach. Additionally, by being placed along seawalls and shorelines, the domes restore hard bottom habitat and improve water quality. (Click here to read more about our Oyster Dome program.)
How do we build Oyster Domes?
First, we pour marine friendly concrete into a fiberglass mold containing a large round buoy surrounded by smaller rubber balls, creating the holes in the oyster domes. Microsilica is mixed with the concrete to balance the pH so oysters are attracted to the domes.
How many people are needed?
We aim to recruit fifteen hard working and heat tolerant volunteers for each session. The minimum age to participate in this project is 16 years old. The project is conducted at our Marine Center (3000 Pinellas Bayway South, Tierra Verde, FL) from 9:00 am-12:00 pm.
In case of inclement weather, building date(s) may be cancelled; please check your e-mail to ensure event will be held, or call us at 727.867.8166 between 8:30 am and 9:00 am to ensure the building will take place that day.
What should volunteers wear/bring?
Wear closed-toe shoes and plan on getting dirty! Please bring your own water bottle; there will be a cooler full of water to refill your bottle on site. Gloves will be provided.
