Rays' Outfielder Matt Joyce
Video: Matt Joyce inspires children to read!
On Wednesday, June 13th, Rays outfielder Matt Joyce visited the St. Petersburg Public Library to kick off "Reading with the Rays-Read Your Way to the Ballpark." Joyce took time out of his busy schedule to read to a group of children and discuss the importance of reading. And what better time for encouragement to read than at the beginning of summer?
The Rays Organization, under owner Stuart Sternberg, strives to find unique and effective ways to give back to the community. The Rays Baseball Foundation, in partnership with ADVANTICA Benefits and Tampa Bay Times Newspaper in Education, partnered together for the fifth season of "Reading with the Rays-Read Your Way to the Ballpark." Reading with the Rays encourages kids to read and awards prizes for reaching certain goals, including a free ticket to a game this summer. The program is made possible through a partnership with the public library systems in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee, Citrus, Pasco and Hernando counties.
Matt Joyce talks with Roxanne Wilder on the Tuesday, June 18th edition of Studio 10. He explains how reading has helped him reach this level of success by helping him get into college. And when he struggled in the minors, he improved his game by reading!
